Nutritional Nugget: Black Seeds
Black seeds (Nigella Sativa) are packed with antioxidants. These antioxidants may be able to protect against several types of chronic conditions, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
Black seeds may lower cholesterol, help kill off bacteria, and alleviate inflammation. It also is believed that black seed may help protect the liver against injury and damage. Some evidence even show that it can aid in blood sugar regulation.
Blacks seeds are known also as black cumin, black coriander, Roman coriander and black caraway. They’ve been used throughout Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. They have a bitter taste that has been described between oregano and onions. You may lightly toast them, ground or use whole to add flavor to bread or curry dishes. You may also eat them raw, adding them to oatmeal or smoothies. Pick some up in our market.
