Nutritional Nugget: Prebiotics vs. Probiotics
What’s the Difference?
Prebiotics and probiotics are both important to your health. However, they play different roles:
Probiotics are live bacteria found in fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, kombucha, and tempeh.
Prebiotics come from food (carbs) types that are mostly fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grain. The good bacteria in your gut eat this fiber.
Gut bacteria, also known as gut flora, perform many important functions. Eating balanced amounts of both probiotics and prebiotics can help ensure you have the right balance of these bacteria.
The food you eat plays an important role in the balance of good and bad bacteria. If, for example, you eat a high sugar and high fat diet, this will influence the gut bacteria in a negative way. This can cause you to absorb more calories than those with healthy balance, who tend to be leaner.
You can take a supplement to ensure you are receiving a proper balance of prebiotics and probiotics. We carry a line that gives you both!
